Sadie

Approximately two years ago my mother adopted Sasha, who is now known as Sadie, from the AAR. My mother had recently lost her husband and her pet "Sarah, " a cocker spaniel about the same time. She was starting to adjust to both of the losses then she lost her huband's beloved dog Bobo to old age. Mom was determined she WAS NOT going to allow herself to love another animal and have it leave her. Then came SADIE. I told her the pretence that I was going to AAR to drop off some items and wanted her to come with. She met Sadie. It was NOT love at first sight. She felt sorry for the ragged little dog, and her sad story. Reluctantly she agreed to give her a chance all the while saying that "if it didn't work out she is going back." Well, we brought her home, she jumped out of the car and wrapped her leash around my legs, I fell, broke my glasses and she headed down the road. I caught her within minutes. She came into the house and parked herself on the couch with a look that
said "if you come near me, I will eat you." It took about three weeks and she started coming out of her shell.
Now she is the prima dona of the neighbourhood. She barks for my Mom when the phone rings. She gives my mother a reason for getting up in the morning. She is her protector. She is her constant friend.
AAR not only saved that life of that little ragged dog, but they also gave my mother a reason to keep on going. For that I am forever grateful.

My 6 year old has been begging for a dog for about a year. We saw a dog a few months ago in the "pet of the week section" in the Tribune that she just had to have. Well we waited until the weekend to come to AAR and unfortunatey he was gone. So every week since then she looks at the "pet of the week" section and we talk about whether it would be a good dog or not. So when the paper came out last week and we saw Kenai (a yellow lab mix puppy) we knew that was the one. My husband went the very next morning to get the him to make sure he wasn't taken. I was worried about bringing a new dog in during the work week, not knowing his schedule or how he would react to a new home, but I can say it could not have gone any better!! He has adjusted so well and is one the best dogs I have seen. He is loving and kind with my 6 year old and yet can run and play with our 17 year old. He knows some commands and seems to be learning quickly. He is well mannered doesn't jump up on people or
bark like crazy when new people come over. He has blended so well with our family that I am encouraging others to go out and adopt. There are so many good animals that need a home! We are thrilled that AAR is open and available to give abandoned pets a good home.

Diesel (aka Simon)

My huband and I had been wanting to get our first dog for a while and we've always known that we wanted to adopt from a shelter. We had been looking at AAR in Tomball online for a few months and there were a few lab mix puppies. We got married on November 18th, so we wanted to wait until after our honeymoon to adopt. On December 26, we looked again online and Diesel (aka Simon) was the only lab mix puppy left out of the ones we saw before. I decided to call and set up an appointment for us to meet him. The next day we met him up at the shelter and decided to adopt him! We have had Diesel for a few weeks now and he has been nothing but a great addition. I am a huge dog lover and I am SO happy that we finally have one of our own. Diesel is a great puppy and has already learned so much in the past few weeks. My husband has taught him how to come on command, sit, lay and fetch. He is a quick learner! We are so thankful for AAR and the opportunity they gave us to adopt our new family
member!

Little Girl

We wanted to adopt a family dog so we visited AAR in November. We saw quite a few dogs and even fell in love with a few, but Little Girl was not on our list that day. I was worried that a young lab/grayhound mix would be too energetic around my small boys.

We came back the next day and many of the dogs were going to PetSmart for adoption day. We decided to check out the dogs that were staying and one of the wonderful volunteers at AAR suggested we give Little Girl a second chance. He warned us that she suffered from a nervous stomach that could be due to the stress of living in a shelter, but might be a permanent issue that had to be maintained with special food. However, we decided to give her a second chance since she had basically grown up at the shelter and needed a home.

I felt sorry for the volunteer because I think we spent an hour playing with Little Girl, getting to know her. And what was not love at first sight became love that afternoon.

We brought her home and she immediately became a loving part of our family. Her stomach issues are completely resolved now that she has a forever home and she has learned sit, stay, fetch, down, and even shake. She absolutely loves the boys and my husband, but she knows she is special to me because she is my little girl. :-)

We live on some acreage so Little Girl gets to run to her heart's content, and we bring her out to the local parks to go hiking in the woods. She is a sweetheart and brings so much joy to our family.

Thank you AAR, for letting us adopt Little Girl! We had a great experience throughout the entire adoption process and the volunteers were all wonderful. And Little Girl thanks you for picking us to give her a forever home.

Kipper

We saw Kipper a few weekends ago at the German Festival. They let her out to visit with us, and it was love at first lick! Her and Johnny have become best friends!

She is the sweetest dog, and a wonderful Christmas gift for all of us!

She is right next to us at all times, whether its on the couch, in the bed, in the car,or on a walk; she is a perfect companion!

She and our cat Bolt, are "tolerating" each other nicely, but I would'nt say they're best of friends:)

She has taught us that her most favorite thing in the world are belly rubs!

Nels

On September 29th (not long after Nels was born), my parents' house in Richmond was struck by lightning and exploded on the spot. No humans were hurt, and the cats made it out with burns on their paws, (and have since recovered fully) but unfortunately our loving dog died immediately. My parents (recent empty-nesters), especially my dad, were completely heartbroken and distraught after this accident. On December 3rd I went to Tomball AAR to find a puppy as a Christmas present for my dad, and I know I couldn't have chosen a better place. I could feel the love in the room as so many people were making additions to their families that day. As soon as I held Nels (a lab-heeler mix), I couldn't put him down. He was about 10 weeks old, and as sweet as can be. I had to do a lot of driving that day, and he slept in my lap the entire way.

I hid Nels in a room at my parents' new house when I gave my dad a card that said "Congratulations on your new baby boy!" And after some confusion on his part, I ran to get the puppy. When I called his name, my dad's jaw dropped, and all he could say was "No, you didn't! You didn't!" When he held Nels in his arms for the first time, tears came to his eyes. I knew I did good picking Nels. I went back to school, and after a week of Nels living with my parents, they couldn't be happier. He has already put on some weight, and is incredibly smart!! He gets along great with our two female cats (we renamed him Jack--like from Three's Company!). My dad gushed about our new puppy all weekend. How smart he is, how sweet he is, how he's learning house rules so well, and mostly how much he's livened up the house. Jack couldn't have found a better home. Surrounded by toys, well-fed, and smothered with love, he is definitely a spoiled little boy! We can't wait to see what kind of dog he grows to be. I am so thankful that I went to AAR as early as I did because now I can't imagine our family without him. He was such a perfect addition!

Grace formerly Sasha

GRACE IS NOW 14 MONTHS OLD, She has recently been to the vet for allergies and a check up. She is 50 lbs, clean bill of health, but has allergies that has been described as common for the Collie breed. She has made new friends with family in FW, still loves playing fetch, and tug-o-war. She has come a long way in the 7 months that we have had her and is a great protector. She loves “her daddy” and has openly demonstrated him as her human. She loves us all, but hates T-Storms. She is primarily a house dog and is a charm to be around once she has accepted you. She has been on many road trips with us thus far and aside from the blaring 18 wheeler going by, has done very well and has yet to be car sick. She is on a steady diet of Purina One, Benedryl (vet approved) Omega fish oil, and the wife describes her as having “baby ducks disease” In other words, she has to be right on top of your heels or “inside your skin” at all times. She has been a blessing, a delight, and a wonderful addition to our family. She will be making a permanent transfer to DFW sometime in the next 3 months due to a decision to move back up north. When she is there, her allergy issues all but disappear. Thank you for putting her in the Tomball paper when you did. We are blessed and thankful we could rescue her before that unfortunate bell tolled for her. Grace as we have been calling her for the last 7 months is anything but graceful but she is the comic relief that breaks the tension and monotony that comes with life. These pictures are recent. We have also found out (and many have been taken) that she is camera shy so we have to be quick with the button. God bless you and the work all of you do. We have an idea of how she spent her last Christmas, but we are also determined that will never happen again.

Dulcie (now known as) Zoe!!

Almost 2 months ago my world changed drastically. I was suffering from a big heartache. After 3 surgeries trying to save my sweet Sadie girl, she passed away from complications. It broke my heart into so many pieces.
We have a Great Dane/Boxer mix who is a big 4 year old Puppy named Shadow (which is also My Little Brother's Seizure Rescue Service Dog). Shadow was suffering from heartache, moping around the house, not eating, and just being sad which increased my sadness even more!!
My Mother couldn't stand to watch the "Suffering" as she calls it. I honestly was feeling guilty for looking at other puppies as soon as we were.
Mom said "Look let's go into AAR and just look, If a puppy speaks to you than we will adopt a baby but if not there are other places." After talking to the ladies at the desk, they brought out Sweet Dulcie girl. She was the Sweetest most hyper lab mixed puppy. She was so sweet but I just wasn't feeling it. I asked to see some other puppies but they either had an adoption pending, was too small for my household. Other puppies just didn't line up. So I asked to see Dulcie again. She was super excited to see us again which honestly started to melt my heart and then the time came. I walked outside with Ms. Denise and Dulcie came over and just sat on my foot. Then the words came out of my mouth...OK Dulcie Girl, It's time to go Home!!!
Well She was set to be spayed on Monday and this was Saturday so she was going to stay until Tuesday and then I would pick her up.
I did, I got her that Tuesday and the ladies words were "just remember she needs to take it easy for the next week so she can heal up." They told me, No one let her in on the info, She's been a ball of fire since day one. She has added so much excitement to our lives. Her name was changed to Zoe and you hear it alot in this House!!
Zoe and Shadow hit it off from the beginning and they are the Best Friends ever now!!
She is the Sweetest Love Bug ever. She loves to Snuggle. Eat any plants she can get her teeth on(lol), Run and get Muddy in the Rain. She has picked up the commands, Sit, Down, Kennel, Off (Because she loves to jump up on you, the Furniture, and anything she can jump off of). We are now working on Stay and Car Rides ( She gets really nervous in a car) She is just a bright light in our home. It feels as if she has been there forever.
Zoe is My about * month old little Girl and I take many many pictures of her as often as I can. If I had to guess, she has grown 3 inches and added about 10lbs (if not more) from the day I brought her home.
I will post as many pictures as I can She is Very Photogenic!!!

She is the Best I can't say that enough!!
I plan to bring her by AAR to show her off soon and so the ladies can see how great she is doing!!
AAR I will forever be one of your biggest fans. Thanks for Not Replacing Sadie's spot in my heart but for repairing the heart ache and putting a smile back on my face!!

I can't remember a time in my life when I didn't have a cat. In September, my husband and I became empty nesters and lost our adult cat -- so we thought about adopting a kitten. AAR had many kittens, but we chose two litter-mates who were 8 weeks old. They were orphan kittens who were rescued at 1 week old and bottle fed by a foster mom. We love our kitties who we have renamed Buster and Lily. They are very healthy, lively, and funny! We appreciate the foster mom and the shelter for caring for these little orphans until they could come to live with us!

Daisy

I decided I needed an older dog to avoid all the trials that go with a puppy. Daisy seemed to be exactly what I was looking for. I found out that this was not totally true. I quickly found out that she is a climber, a jumper and can run like the wind. The first night, she was great. The next day I saw her walk on my furniture.....oh not my sofa or chairs but on the tables and if something was in the way...too bad. I was plugging in a cord on my computer and heard Daisy when she jumped up on my computer chair. I looked up in time to see two brown eyes watching me as the chair rolled by at an alarming speed. As it turned out, neither she nor the chair nor anything else was hurt. When I left her the first time she climbed on the night stand and knocked off a lamp and broke it. So now when I leave, Daisy stays in the bathroom with water and a nice comfy rug and everything stays safe. Yesterday, she jumped on the bed and climbed on the pillows, hung herself over the wooden headboard,
parted the curtains and was looking out the window. Daisy loves to be outside but when not on a leash she runs constantly and covers 4 acres so fast that there's no way I could even thinking of catching her. If I wait long enough, somethiing will happen that will slow her down long enough to catch her. This has taken as long as an hour and 45 minutes and she's been running the whole time.
Keep her? You bet! I can hardly wait to see what she does next.

My AAR adoption

I had made a deal with my mother and father that if i got A's and B's then i could get a dog. Of course my being an all a and b student, it wasn't that hard. Then around New Years, we went to AAR Tomball. I searched all the puppies, and even held some. I had my eyes open for any type of puppy. I had my eyes set on a cute little female puppy, but then I saw two white male puppies just come in. I felt so bad for those dogs, I even considered getting one of the white ones, but my heart was set on the female. My puppy whose name is Iris was that little tiny female puppy. Now as she comes around to her 1st birthday, I still remember that she was the very first puppy I ever held that adoption day. Of course I held more, but she just stole my heart. I am wondering about her brother and where he went. So I promise I will add some pictures of her online, and if you think you have her brother, please post his story. I just know she misses him.

ABBEY

Abbey was adopted during an adoption day at Petco. I had initially gone to Petco to pick up cat food as a favor for my parents, and came home with Abbey.

She has always been so loving, but she was a little skittish at first. I think she finally realized that she was home, and her personality came out. She love, love, loves to play with her sister/bff Trixie. They are also connected at the hip- if one wants to go out, they always get the other one to go out with them. Abbey also enjoys going to the dog park, and is extremely friendly with both dogs and humans.

Although I joke about going to the Petco for cat food and coming home with a dog, I am really grateful for those series of events. Abbey is truly an amazing addition to our family.

"Lexi"

Hi AAR,

I adopted Lexi about 5or6 weeks ago and Tim and I are completely in love with Lexi Lynn Lavergne. We gave her a middle name and our last of course. OH Lexi also lives on Linda Lane here in Tomball Hills.

Lexi only has three legs and weighs 3.6 lbs but she is as fast as a girl can be. Lexi loves to play with us and would like our older dogs to play, but they are only interested in dinner and lite play with people.

Lexi has a wonderful personality and now a loving home. We are looking for a companion and playmate for Lexi that weighs no more than 6 lbs and is female.

We are very grateful to AAR for the work you do for all of the precious animals that are lucky enough to cross your path. God Bless everyone involved at all levels.

Lexi has a large crate that she stays in while I am at work at the High School here in Tomball, I put her crate up off of the ground so that she can look out of the window with her housemates.

Wren

Wren, formerly Carly, was adopted on June 4. Her weight was 3 lbs. By August, Wren had gained 5 lbs and grown into a lively and bright little girl. She has learned many commands. In addition to the usual, sit and stay, Wren can "ring the bell" , "get the mail" and "catch the ball".

She is not often with strangers and is still cautious if she sees another person in the house or close to it.

Beau

We adopted Beau from AAR at Petco in Tomball August 13th. We saw him when we came in that afternoon, and I knew it was fate that we would keep him, but it took us a few hours to decide if we wanted to add another dog to our family.

Beaureguard is the name my dad made my mom give one of our kittens as kids in exchange for letting us keep him, and he still has the cat to this day, my sister adopted a cat name Beau a few years ago, and when I saw this dog's name I knew he was meant for me.

We have a 5 year old Corgi mix, and 2 kittens that are about 9 months old already. When Beau came home with us that day he fit in with our family perfectly. Mya our other dog just adored him from day one, and she has been acting like a young pup again now that she has another dog to run around the yard and play with.

Beaux loves rawhide bones and playing fetch with a tennis ball; he even taught our Mya how to chew on bones.

I adopted Jack on July 1st and love him so much!! He is growing very fast; he is already 16 lbs at 3 months old :) He loves to play in the sprinkler whenever he gets the chance. He is a very happy puppy who loves to visit with people especially little kids. He is doing so well at home with his training! He is also a big talker! He loves to say hello when I first come home and makes sure that everybody knows when he wants to be the center of attention which is often :) He loves to play with his stuffed animal toys or enjoy any type of chewy treat! I am so happy that I found Jack and am so thankful for all the fosters who took such great care of him before he became my new love! Thanks AAR!!!!!

Dazey

I volunteered at the AAR with my best friends church. My grandma (BJ) had been volunteering already, so I asked her if I could start volunteering there with her. The next day, I was outside walking dogs on leads, when I saw one I had recognized (Dazey). I said to myself, "oh, that's Dazey." I went over to her as she was barking. When I took her out to play, I absolutely fell in love with her! I put her inside, and heard that she was heartworm positive. My heart was wripped into shreds. I loved her to death. I began coming to the AAR almost everyday (she was getting worse), because I was scared that I wouldn't get to say good - bye. I had to stay home after having surgery, and I was very sad, I didn't know what was going to happen with Dazey. That day, Dazey was very down, and depressed. Everyone thought that she was very sick. My grandma told them, "It's because Maddie's not here." The next when I came, she was fine and up and her normal crazy self! Months later (Dazey had recovered
from heartworm), I was inside doing homework. I couldn't find my mom, so I checked outside. There was a big white puff of bouncy curls. I stepped back for a second. I said "Am I dreaming, like seriously, this doesn't feel real." I was really serious though! She's has been in our family for seven months now, and she fits right in! I am very proud to have given her a reason to stay strong, and to live through her horrible heartworm. I will never, ever forget that I changed her life... and she changed mine.

Faith(Fancy Eva)

We got Faith for our other cat at first they were cautious but now they love to play together. Very sweet cat so glad we got her!! She loves to give kisses and play. Loves to be scratched and petted. Her favorite toy is those toy mice. Hope yall like the pics!!

my husband and I adopted for now named Harley back in May. At first, I was worried she would not get along with our cat but in some weird way they're best friends lol. She is such a big part of our family and we are very glad to have found her. She fits right in. Thanks aar :)

In memory of Norman

We don't know the beginning of Norman's story but I can tell you how great it got. When Norman showed up at the shelter Oct 10,2004 the lights were off, the doors were locked and our shifts were over. It was time for our last check and then I saw him. This man was standing at the door with something in his hands~ I opened the door and asked how I could help~he said "I found him by the dumpster and he needs help". Even though we were full and I didn't think he was going to make it much longer, I took him from the man and said "I'll take him from here". Not moving much, covered in ticks and fleas, I put him in my car and headed home. The odds were not on Norman's side~ he was too sick for the surgeries he needed and it was going to get expensive. We didn't give up on him and he knew it. He realized he had a reason to live again and did he ever! He loved life and was loved by all who knew him! On July 6,2011 Norman let us know in his own way that he was ready to put his wings on
and wait for us on the Rainbow Bridge.

My husband Dan and I are grateful for AAR and that late Thursday shift!

Sadie Mae

We adopted Sadie Mae yesterday!! She is a beautiful 7 month old female black lab/retriever mix. We have 3 young boys and a 2 year old Aussie Shepherd mix (Oscar) so I thought we would never be able to handle another dog. I walked in Petco yesterday to return something and I saw the dogs from AAR without any intentions of adopting one. I saw Sadie and fell in love with her. I texted my husband a photo and he agreed to my crazy idea. After taking Sadie home, Oscar showed her the ropes and it feels like she has been with us forever. We are so happy to have found Sadie! She is smart, very trainable and a terrific snuggler. We are looking forward to many years of loving her! She is great with the boys and I finally have my "little girl". Thanks for all you do at AAR!

We adopted Toby in March and are in love. He fits right in and is best buddies with our other dog Hannah!! The two are inseparable and play all day. My two kids also adore Toby.

after my Buffy past away, I came looking for a dog at AAR and found..

Beanie (AKA: "Grumble Bunny") Adopted Nov. '10. Beanie (Listed as Lima Bean) is adjusting to her life with us. She and I are learning to communicate - such as ferocious barking at 8:17 p.m. means "it's time to put me to bed, I'm tired!" and "Lets snuggle" brings her to me for hugs. She loves her toys and often sleeps with a soft toy in her front paws and a tennis ball in her mouth! She has an appetite for chicken jerky and freshly cooked ground turkey. I love to come home as she greets me at the door with a big grin and jumping for joy. She is the light of my life!

To each of you at AAR, I wish to thank you for all you do. You have brought such love and happiness to my family through the dogs you care for and work so diligently to place. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your time, love, and dedication to our abandoned animals that are in your care.

Chloe now Daisy Cakes adopted in 2010

Daisy Cakes - was adopted March '10 by my daughter-in-law Laura. Daisy (was known as Chloe). Laura fell deeply in love with Daisy when shopping for Anna at PetsMart. Daisy is definitely Laura's girl. Daisy loves to lounge on a ledge in the pool and submerge her face so that she looks like an alligator most of the time. She taught Anna that swimming is a great way to cool off. Whenever Daisy wants something or isn't getting her way, she goes to Laura for "mom to take up for her". Very cute! 3rd from Chris' family.

Anna - was adopted in Sept.' 07 by my son Matthew. Anna and Matt have had a great time with each other, going for walks and rides in his jeep. Matt was looking for a "real dog" and found Anna. They were truly meant to be a team. Anna now has Daisy as her"sister puppy" and each has learned to respect the other's "space!. Anna loves to come visit "Beanie" whenever possible, romping with her. Beans adores Anna and would be thrilled if Anna could stay here all the time. Anna has a gentle disposition and is a fabulous girl. 2nd of 4 adopted by Chris' family.

Harley (Poster puppy Dec. ' 06 (Jaeger) - Harley has led an interesting life since being adopted by my daughter Laura. He went to college with her in Austin and visited a dog park there. After a few times in the puppy area, he and Laura were somewhat confident that things were "ok". That is when a pit bull (should not have been allowed in the puppy area!) attacked Harley. He survived, enduring the "cone of shame" after several surgeries, months of healing, and loads of love and dedication from Laura, Harley healed and is a happy healthy dog. He is our circus dog, doing many tricks and entertaining others with his "dances" and "sneezing on command". Very impressive dog! He is so loved by all who know him. Sugar was one of the pets AAR featured at the Gleannloch Farms adoption fair. I had recently donated a portrait to AAR and went to the event with my mother, just to say hello to the volunteers and to buy lunch in support of the Rescue.

Even though I protested, my mother (who I live with, along with several adopted cats) was smitten with Sugar. She was a pretty, petite, Tux cat with a sad look in her eyes. We learned that she was 11, and that her owner had passed away. We went home to talk about it. And decided to adopt Sugar.

The next day we went to AAR and talked to Mary, and Sugar. I was so impressed with the cat section of the building - a nice, bright room with an exercise area in the middle. All of the kitties were so well cared for, and loved by the volunteers.

Sugar came home with us; the plan was to put her in a bedroom by herself and gradually introduce the other cats. Tragedy struck two days later when my 7-year-old cat Lacey died suddenly from a blood clot. I was devastated, and honestly had no desire to pay any attention to Sugar. But while I was sitting in "her room" and crying, Sugar jumped up in my lap, put her paws on my chest and licked my face. I felt she was saying, "I know what it's like to lose someone you love." That's when this sad-faced little cat won my heart.

Sugar has become my studio cat, sitting on my drawing table while I paint. She likes to play "paws" under the door with the other cats, and goes on a gallop through the upstairs every evening. She has run of the house, but still prefers to sleep on her blankie that was made by an AAR volunteer. She 's lost a bit of that sad look in her eyes, and so have I -- thanks to Sugar.

I am having a great time at my new home. I've trained my family to rub my belly when I roll onto my back, to throw my squeaky frog when I bring it to them, and to give me a nice big chew bone whenever I pick up one of their shoes and pretend I'm going to eat it.

Houdini, my feline friend, has taught me how to chase bugs. We also play tag and wrestle indoors. We were the same size when I first got here but now I'm twice as big as he is!

The Labrador puppy next door comes over every day to play tug of war with me and to splash with me in the pond and in my wading pool.

I wish I knew what happened to my sister Edith who was adopted the same morning I was. Are you out there Edith???

AAR Volunteers, thank you for the many hours you spent feeding and cleaning up after me and my fellow inmates at the shelter. You people are the best!

I adopted Carlie, now Wren or Rennie, just a week ago. She is barely 10 weeks old. What a sweet loving baby. She is very smart. Already sits on command and I think she is housebroken. Today was the first time she actually went to the door when she needed to go out.

I saw a picture of this adorable dog and realized that my family had to have him!! However, when I called to inquire about him, a lady was there adopting him. I was disappointed, but decided there were other cute animals to adopt, so the next day, my husband and I took a trip to the shelter to check a few out.

We were chit chatting with the ladies when my husband made a comment about Theo. The worker's eyebrows jumped up when she heard his name and asked if I was the person who called about him yesterday. When I told her I was, her face burst into a huge smile as she told me he was back. It turned out the lady that had adopted him, was not ready for such a large dog, and had brought him back that morning!!!

They brought Theo out to us, and we immediately knew he was meant to be ours.

He has fit in quite nicely with our rowdy bunch.

Eddie aka Mike

After searching shelters for three months for just the right puppy for our household, we saw Eddie's picture on AAR's website at 10 p.m. on a Friday night and hurried out to Tomball when the shelter opened Saturday morning promptly adopted Eddie and brought him home to meet our teenage daughter, two grown female dogs, and two cats (all rescues). Our household has not been the same since! Eddie's name changed ten times in five days before we all finally agreed to call him Mike. He loves playing tag with our cat Houdini, shredding the newspapers in his crate to bury his big rawhide bone, running with the big dogs outside, splashing in his wading pool, giving kisses, and raising mayhem everywhere he goes. He is already learning his house manners and likes to give kisses to the family and to greet our guests at the door. Mike is a clown who makes us laugh every day and he is growing fast. AAR Volunteers were so very helpful in walking me through the process of adopting. I had never done it before but by the time I left, I was ready to take them all home. I came in to pick up SASHA and was not disappointed to find out she was still there. Chocolate Lab/Collie. She was expectantly excited from all the hustle and bustle of pets and people going in and out but I met her with her handler outside and she was as sweet as the day was long with that "pick me please Ill love you forever" look in her eyes. The ladies and gentleman were helpful, attentive, full of information and insight. They told me SASHA had been there for two months in a cage and I just had to end it that day. After I met with SASHA my only question was "what is it going to cost me to take her home." SASHA has been everything we wanted and more. LOVABLE AND A BALL OF ENERGY!!! She adopted a towel out of my closet and made it her own and there was no negotiating with her. She claimed her property and t
hat was that. She has been ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL and the wife was simply overjoyed. Ms. SASHA is wasting no time marking her territory and and adjusting wonderfully. She loves the back yard but I have found she is scared of the dark when outside. I go outside with her and she is happy as a kid on a playground. The neighbors now know that it is her back yard enter at your own risk ha ha ha. She is going to give us many years of joy and companionship and we will reciprocate it with love, affection, LOTS of toys, and trips to the ranch from time to time. She will be a travel dog when possible, and already has lots of Face Book friends! Thank you AAR for bringing hours of fun and laughter into our simple home.

Two years ago, I saw Rex's (Chiweenie) picture in an online newsletter on the Monday after a Canine First Aid class. I fell in love and my husband went to see him. Imagine our surprise when the people who run the shelter turned out to be the people who had been in our class. It was fate! Rex has been a delight and joy. He speaks to me (my husband says he barks - but it is always telling me something!) He is my little hunter - he caught 22 mice when we were overrun the first summer he was with us. We are confident we are protected! The other 4 dogs just let him do all the work.

I finally was able to show my appreciation by volunteering at AAR starting late last summer. In February, A small gray old man appeared in one of the kennels in the small dog area, and when I saw him it was love at first sight! Lassie (don't ask!), formerly Dusty, had been found living under a house. I am sure they thought he was a possum. He has only four teeth. When he holds his ears back he looks like Rizzo from the Muppets (or a meerkat). When I met him he weighed less than 3 pounds, he now weighs 7.5 and is at a good weight. He is a lover. He licks me face when he needs to out, when he's happy, when he's hungry - he just licks. But then he politely dries my face with his neck. Sweet. He is just getting integrated with the family, but no one objects, no one is marking (as they did when Rex came) and he and Rex do a lot together. Still does not know how to play, but that will come. I will spoil them all for the rest of their lives.

Nearly two years ago, we were looking for a puppy. We spent hours searching on PetFinder.com and visiting animal shelters. Then on my birthday, we visited AAR. We looked at 4 different puppies, but Skooter gave us the look and our search was over.

Skooter ls a charmer, although he is still working on charming our 3 cats. He uses his 5 tricks (sit, shake, lay down, roll over, and the cutest high-five) to charm people. When he isn't being cute, he loves to go on walks. He gets super excited when it is time to take his daily walk. He runs to the closet where I keep his leash and bounces up and down. If I am not quick enough, he barks at me to encourage me to hurry up. He loves to chase the cats and play ball. When he finally runs out of energy, he puts himself to bed in his cage. All we have to say is "Sleepy dog".

Thank you to AAR for being his caregivers for the 3 months of his life. He is now in his forever home!

I've had Millie in my house for about 2 months now, and I don't know how I ever lived without her! She is just the sweetest and most entertaining dog. It didn't take her long to claim her chair and her favorite spots to snooze. And yes, she was sleeping in my bed after the first two nights! Millie absolutely loves toys; the more fuzz to tear out, the better! She really loves going on walks, playing fetch with her rubber 'stick' in the backyard, learning tricks (high-five being her favorite) and giving big kisses, whether your prepared for them or not! Chip has settled in beautifully to his new home in Atascosita! He has a sister - Mandy, a 11 year old Blue Heeler (her picture is the last one) and she is showing him all the ropes at home...how to sleep in bed with us, how to treat their brother Leo (our 10 year old inside cat) how to sit, stay and go outside for the right things to do for treats - and how to chew Dingos! He loves all the new flavors of Dingos!

Chip has become the children of the neighborhood's new ambassador when we go on walks - he thinks that he is the Mayor. Loves a pet from everyone. He also loves water; loves to chase the sprinklers when they come on.

Chip is an absolute joy; so bright, active and loves attention and snuggles - we are so blessed to have found him with you. Thank you, thank you for taking such great care of him until we found him for our family!

I have been volunteering at AAR since July of 2010. I have felt so fortunate to have been offered this opportunity to work with the wonderful people and share time with all of the 4 legged residents. I was afraid I might become a crazy cat or dog lady, but so far had resisted the urge to bring them all home.
Our grand old lady passed away a few days ago and our house did not feel like a home without a four legged kid in it. There were several kids I would have loved to invite home with me, but Mike seemed to fit the bill. I always spend a little extra time with Mike each time I visit the shelter and he is such a sweet boy.
Mike was ready to go home with us. He climbed in the truck, gave AAR a final look and then was ready to go.
We feel so lucky to have Mike in our family. His biggest decision from now on will be trying to decide which couch or bed to sleep on.
Will keep you posted on his adjustment to home life.

I had a really hard time picking a new name for my puppy from AAR, but with the help of some close friends, I settled on Riley. Riley loves to play fetch and to be outside in the sunshine. He can retrive that ball for hours! He's learning to walk on the leash and gets a little bit better at it every day. He is such a cuddle bug. Whenever he meets new people, he instantly crawls into their laps and begs to be petted. Everyone who meets him is absolutely smitten.Riley is the perfect antidote for a long day at work. I absolutely adore coming home to him! He's already my new best friend! My favorite thing about Riley is his speckled coat. He looks like he has tiger stripes on one side (see pictures below).
I can't wait to watch him grow from a cute puppy to a handsome dog! Thanks to everyone at AAR for taking such good care of him until he found his forever Mommy!

We brought Bruiser home Feb 4, 2011 and he's a wonderful addition to our family! He's made himself right at home, in fact it's hard to imagine not having him around now :) He is a bit of a couch potato and even has his own spot (see pictures) on the end of our sofa. We go on walks every morning, Bruiser might be almost 100 lbs, but he loves his walks and is very well behaved on his leash- in fact he's just very well behaved any time!
He is loving his new little sister and the cats are "letting" him stay in their home :) He actually cried when he first saw the cats, but after a few good sniffs decided that they're pretty cool, but he'd rather be dozing or playing frisbee. Hi! My name is Lori Ball. My family adopted a black lab pully on 12/26/2010 named Ted. We changed his name to Bo. I wanted to give you an update on Bo. He is doing wonderful. He loves to play with our little boy EJ in the back yard. When EJ jumps on the trampoline, Bo gets excited and races around the back yard. Someday soon he will be able to jump up there on the trampoline. This is not encouraged, but it will be a funny surprise to both Bo and EJ when he finally makes it up there. Bo has a kennel but we noticed our older son, Tyler, sneaks Bo out of the kennel every night and into bed with him. Ty is a pretty tall 15 year old and will be surprised how Bo will kick him out of bed in another 6 months of growing. Bo still gets excited when Eric or myself come home and he wets on the floor a little. We dont know how to break him of this since it is a reaction because he is excited. I have attached a few pictures of Bo for you. One is of him and the other is of Bo and EJ after a long day of playing. He is spoiled rotten and we could not imagine our home without him. She has learned several new tricks from jumping off my daughters bed like a flying squirrel into my daughters arms to jumping up high enough to be caught and held. We adopted Gypsy Rose (formerly known as Booda) the week of Thanksgiving.
She is a "full figured" girl weighing in at 20 lbs. and was thought to be a little on the lazy side. The pictures below were taken just days after she joined our family and there is nothing lazy about this girl! As you can see she loves to play with her purple feather mouse and you should see her climb the stairs! With all
of this exercise she has even dropped a few pounds, She greets us at the door
when we come home and moves from room to room at night making sure we

Willie became Bo as soon as I left the shelter!!! Just one week before I adopted Bo (Willie) I got a doberman puppy I named Bella. Bella was lonesome so when I heard about Bo (Willie), I knew he would be a wonderful companion for Bella. As in the pictures posted, Bo and Bella are learning to sit for their treats...Bo (Willie) is doing better this week he usually just wants to jump up and down for his treat but watching Bella he realizes she gets hers first because she is sitting pretty.
The other pic: they are snuggled up after a fun day of playing. Thanks to AAR for bringing Bo (Willie) into my and Bella's home...They will have a wonderful time growing up as sister and brother.

We adopted both Feliz and Bella from AAR, about a year ago now, and we could not be happier!

From the start, Feliz, (the pit bull terrier), has been the most affectionate, sweetest dog. She loves everyone she meets, and always has a 'smile' on her face. :)

Bella is the Border Collie/Lab mix, and is a very goofy girl. She is extremely shy, and still not very good with strangers, but she has come such a long way in the last year. It took her some time to trust us, but she is now very affectionate, sweet, and loyal with us. Feliz has been great 'big sister', in showing her how to be more outgoing and trusting.

I am very happy that you have come to this great shelter where they took very good care of me for 6 months.
It was a long time, but I knew the people at the shelter would find just the right family for me to own. My new pet
parents care for me very much and I am delighted to live with them.

They have provided me with a nice bed and also a nice dining area with an exquisite dog bone china service. But best of all, I have lots of nice toys and bones. My favorite toy is the squirrels-in-the-tree stump. I put them in. I take them out. I chew on them. Really a great toy. I recommend it highly if you are the new people for the dog you have selected to be owned by. I also have my own nice sporty sweater for the cold weather and am toasty as can be in it, just like my blanket on the sofa by my TV.

So I wish to say Merry Christmas to everyone. To my mates still at the shelter, hope you enjoy your people selection! And to you people out there looking, find a nice dog like me and you will have the best Christmas ever.

Bugs - happy go lucky!

I fell in love this with little guy the first moment I saw him! His original name was buddy; I changed his name to Bugs for his BIG eyes!
This boston terrier is the joy of my life. He's always the center of attention and will demand it from you by pawing your hand until you pet him! :) He is spoiled; everytime we go to a pet store he leaves with something new.
He's almost a year old now and I've had him for 8 months.
He's such a loving dog, gets along with all animals, and people!
Never a dull moment with him - BIGGEST cuddle monster you can think of too!
I am so grateful to have found Bugs because he is everything to me. He is my support when I'm down and he knows my feelings and is always by my side.

Lucky (previously known as Amos)

Before adopting Lucky(also known as Amos) our family had been taking care of a stray lab for 3 weeks. The lab found his home and we, including our dog Casey, missed him terribly. We realized we wanted another dog. We saw Lucky at Adoption day at Petsmart and fell in love. We have had Lucky for 3 weeks now and he is a perfect match for our family. Our other dog, Casey and Lucky are the best of buddies. They play together all day and lay in the sun watching(and chasing) the squirrels in the backyard. You never see Casey without Lucky. With 3 kids, 2 cats, 1 fish and now 2 dogs, our household is very busy but we love it! Thank you AAR for taking such good care of Lucky until he found his forever home!!

When we lost Sarge our male dog, Kayla our female went into a deep depression and was grieving. They had been together for three years since they were puppies. We took Kayla around to various shelters to try and find her a companion and she always turned her nose up or turned her back on the dogs. Then came the day we found AAR and they brought out a little pup they called Stevie, who's real name is LT. She looked at him and it was instant. For the first time in months her tail began to wag, her ears perked up and thus he came home with us.

Kayla and LT were meant to be together. They play, the eat, they sleep together and she is actually training him to be a great dog! He's watched her and learned to "sit" and "stay" and go outside for "good dog"! He's been with us now for two months and as far as we're concerned, he's here for life!

Our thanks and appreciation to AAR. Without them we wouldn't have two happy dogs!

WE ADOPTED MARLY A FEW WEEKS AGO. HE IS A GREAT DOG, VERY PLAYFUL, AND VERY WELL BEHAVED. MY GIRLS WERE AFRAID OF HIM FOR ABOUT 10 SECONDS. THEN THEY REALIZED HE IS JUST A BIG BABY. THEY AND HE LOVE PLAYING CATCH AND GOING FOR WALKS. HE IS SO WELL TRAINED. I DON'T THINK I COULD HAVE ASKED FOR A MORE PERFECT DOG FOR ME OR MY GIRLS. Emily Roosting

We took Emily to our vet Saturday. She received a complete physical and passed with flying colors. The only blip was that she could lose a little weight. Lakewood Vets entered the information you provided into her file. They state that we adopted a great and healthy cat.

The only defect I have noticed is a propensity to roost/sleep on pillows on the wrong side of the bed. Alice and I enjoyed meeting you. You made the adoption process enjoyable.

Oscar & Zoe (AKA Snowball & Snowplow)

I am so grateful to have found Oscar & Zoe. We have really enjoyed our time together so far and I love watching their personalities come out. They wear each other out wrestling and playing and then they nap for a good while. It's a tough life!

Thanks to Brad & Lisa for all that they did for these puppies before I came along. I'm sure that Oscar and Zoe really appreciate it too and I know they had a great foster home with them.

It's sad to know that someone left these puppies all alone, but I am so blessed to have them in my life and I'm proud to give them a happy home.

Brandi and Charlotte

I adopted Charlotte from AAR on 9/11/2009. She was 3.5 years old, shy and timid. Charlotte came with some wonderful qualities: she can sit, walks on and off leash, rarely barks, sits up on her back legs and is a loving dog. We look forward to our Sunday 2-mile walks... I don't know if I'm walking so that Charlotte gets her exercise.... or, if she's walking so that I GET MINE.

I decided that Charlotte needed a dog-pal. So, I adopted Brandi from AAR in August 2010. Little Brandi is 1.5 years old, never meets a stranger and is afraid of nothing. Both Charlotte and I love her. She has made Charlotte a "better" dog, too. Charlotte is more friendly around people and does not want to get left out of any attention.

Everyone is encouraged to adopt a dog or cat from a shelter if you are looking for a pet. AAR is wonderful and is a no-kill shelter, one of the many reasons I volunteer my time there.

Max (formerly Bud)

Dear Pat and AAR Staff,

We just wanted to send you an update about "Bud". We re-named him Max. He is a very, very smart dog. I thought that our last dog was the smartest, but Max in some ways surpasses her. He usually learns what not to do after one "no". However, if he really wants to do something, he'll do it regardless of the consequences. We learned that he has absolutely no fear of people. However, I do believe that if someone broke into our house, he would at least look intimidating even if he doesn't bark! I'm sure his love of people is from his excellent care at your facility.

Max would love to chase after cats and deer if he had the opportunity. We were hoping to train him to stay in our yard without having to leash or pen him up. However, he has such a strong sense of smell that he picks up a deer scent and will run off. So, we keep him either in our fenced yard, in the house, or leashed. He would have made a great search and rescue dog.

Our son, Connor, loves Max! He plays with him everyday and frequently writes about him in his writing assignments at school. We went camping recently to the South Llano River outside of San Antonio and took Max with us. These pictures are from that trip. Max runs off if he is not on a leash. Plus, we were in a state park that requires dogs be leashed. So, you'll see him leashed in the picture. He loved swimming in the river and sleeping with us in the tent. He refused to sleep on the ground and crawled onto Connor's air mattress with him.

We hope everything is going well at AAR and thank you for bringing Max into our lives.

Sissy

My wife saw Sissy on the ad for the rescue and called me, We have to go see this one she said however I was not able to go at that time so Debbie went to see Sissy without me on her lunch hour. Sometime around 12:30 Debbie called me crying and I knew that Sissy would be ours, so after work I went to AAR to get her and wow she looked exactly like a dog we had a few yrs ago named Roxy who died.
Since getting Sissy we have had nothing but fun with her and she has taken to us really well. She is also very smart, gentle and loveable. I am posting a couple of pics we took of Sissy after a hard day of playing around.
Thanks AAR without you we would have never found Sissy and we plan to keep her for a long time

My husband and I adopted Petie in September 2010. We lost our black lab to cancer and we waited until the time was right to adopt another dog. When we first met Petie, also known as Milo, it was love at first sight.
Since then, we have bonded with our lovable Petie. He has been the sweetest and most calm dog we've ever had! He loves when we "travel" to the dog park and he especially loves being the most social dog at the park. One more dog in our home means one less on the streets!

I adopted Snickers in July of 2010. He had two previous homes that did not work out, but this will be his last home. He loves attention just as much as I love giving it to him! He is a wonderful little dog and is a great companion!

Ellie

I can't thank you enough for my beautiful girl, Ellie, or "Ellie Belle" as we have come to call her. It was love at first sight for me, but even though she was wonderful from the start, Ellie layed low and took a few days to get her bearings and feeel secure. At first we didn't think she had a voice, and she didn't seem to know what to do with a toy - but now, wow, she's as playful as can be and let's herself be heard! She's so cute when she's prancing after the birds and squirels in the yard (hasn't caught any thank goodness), and she loves it when the grandkids come to play, letting them crawl all over her - she's sooo good! And smart? Ellie can sit, shake, lay down, stay, walk well on her leash, and has never had a housetraining accident from day one! I feel so blessed to have her in my life! I was warned that she was a "bolter," so I had her microchipped when I took her in for a once-over with my local vet. Of course the vet fell in love with her like everyone does, and I'm happy to report that that there have been no "bolting" incidents to date. I can't adequately express my gratitude and admiration for all of the wonderful volunteers at aar - your policy of caring for every pet for life made it possible for me to find Ellie after her original adoption didn't work out. Thank You, Thank You, Thank You!!!

Remington & Misty

We adopted Remington the beginning of February 2009. He was my birthday present. He has been nothing but a wonderful addition to our family. We could not have asked for a better, more loving pet. He thinks that he is a lap dog and loves to curl up next to you and have his belly rubbed. He is such a smart dog too. Sometimes it seems that he knows what I am thinking. It is a toss up between what he enjoys the most. Being outside chasing a frisbee or playing in the sprinkler. We even bought him his own plastic swimming pool!

We adopted Misty just this June after deciding that Remington needed a playmate. At first they didn't quite get along, but now they are hardly ever apart. Misty is such a sweet girl and loves to be right in your face loving on you all the time. She is more the right size for a lap dog and takes advantage of it. She is still constantly rolling around on the ground and doing what I call her "army crawl" whenever she goes outside. She loves to play outside with Remington. She is about 30lbs lighter, but she holds her own. It is too funny to watch them together. When they play inside she will jump on the ottoman to be eye level with him!

We can't say thank you enough to all the wonderful people who helped take care of them while they were at AAR. You are truly blessings in their lives. I could not have asked for better pets. They are my sweet angels.

RUGER aka HUNTER The dancing dog!

Ruger (aka Hunter) had been abandoned two times - two times he ended up with AAR! Thank GOD for such a wonderful group of volunteers. Ruger (Hunter) was in the Tomball parade and was the dancing dog. He's a celebrity - we even ran into his dancing partner not long ago at Petco.

We went to AAR and were looking at dogs to adopt. We had met a few - none of which were a great fit. One of the volunteers actually suggested meeting one more as we were headed out the door - 30 minutes later and we were loading our new boy in the car and heading home.

He loves his new home in Tomball - everyday he runs wild and crazy around the backyard. His worst habit is begging, but I'm probably at fault....who can say no to this guy?! He's in heaven at Burroughs Park (where he can get off the leash and run free) and the Hound dog in him really comes through. He loves hanging his head out the window, catching/chasing his toys and antagonizing my girlfriend's grumpy cat! He just wants to be friends, just like he wants to do with every other animal. He's a hound/lab mix, but he chews through even the toughest of toys. Even Pit Bull rated toys stand NO CHANCE (we have a separate room where we keep our shoes)! He loves water, unless it's for a bath! He knows when he can be rough with me, but is very gently with my 6 year old.

His name is Ruger (like the firearm), but there are many nicknames for him. BDB (Big Dumb Bear) because you can pet his neck until and he leans so far he falls over backwards; Rugie, Rugalicious etc.

My girlfriend is wanting to train him to be an agility dog - he is SOOO agile it's crazy. Me, I just want to get him a friend from AAR. Whatever we decide, we just look forward to many more years with this AWESOME friend.

Someone abandoned Miracle the tiny blue eyed kitten in front of the shelter in a box on a Sunday. She was all alone and so tiny!!! I was called upon to foster her - she had only just opened her eyes. I named her Miracle because she loved romping with her collies from the time she first saw them. I had to take her away from the collies who adored her when they would get too rough and they would all cry to be back together again - Miracle cried the loudest! Finally I had to adopt Miracle and she has been with us for 5 years or more...?

She of course thinks she is a collie and goes with us on walks on my 2.5 acres, except she shows off by darting up and down trees and fences. She comes like a dog when you call her. She cleans her "mommy collie's" ears every day. She will sit on a end table and her mommy collie will sidle by and offer her ears. She always receives kisses from her baby Miracle.

FInally Miracle got her own boyfriend from AAR - Bubba the red cat. She still loves her collie family though! Thanks to AAR for all they do!

We were told AAR had a Japanese Chin puppy for adoption. I don't know who loved the other one more at first sight.

He has been a wonderful addition to the family and if truth be told I think he knows it. He goes by Jackie but I like to call him "Lucky Dog".

He is playful, lovable and is really great with pets. Did I say spoiled??

Choco the lab

First we wanted to adopt a dog named Bear, but when we got to AAR he already was taken.
But my grandma was telling them why she wanted this dog and they said they had the perfect dog for her. Well out came Choco with his wagging tail. It was love at first site! He loves to go to the dog park and loves his new doggy friends! We never thought of getting a lab at all till he came out. He is a chocolate lab mix. We kept his name because he knows his name. We are so glad we actually thought of getting another dog! He is a great family pet! He is also the clown of the family! He thinks he is a lap dog. He will jump into your lap and it is so funny. We are trying to teach him shake. Sometimes he will get too hyper but we still love him!

Lola and Charlie J (previously Jose) are fitting in wonderfully at our house. They have been preciously sweet with the kids. There was concern that Jose would be very timid when we first met him because that was how he had been at the shelter. It turns out that he only needed Lola. When they are apart, they are much more timid and cautious. When they are together, get ready and watch out!! They play like crazy, and I have never seen two dogs actually lay on each other to rest. We are so glad we were able to bring them both home so they could stay together.
